Topic: YOUR TONGUE (2)
Bible Text: James 3:1-12
1 Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.
2 We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check.
3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal.
4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.
5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.
6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind,
8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.
10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.
11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?
12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.
One of the reasons God created us is for us to praise Him. We praise God through singing praises, in prayers, dancing, and so on; the commonest of all is singing praises of His name. What do we use in singing to our God? We make use of our mouth in singing praises to God. Can’t you see that God is awesome in His works and ways? No wonder He created us with tongue and mouth.
Why do we now always use the same tongue and mouth God gave us to praise Him to curse and call on other gods? Some of us are too loose in using our mouth, any little thing, we start to rain curses on people, some even go ahead to curse themselves all in the name of annoyance.
Some of us even go ahead in using the same mouth that we use in praising God to call on small gods and praise them all in the name of seeking for power and fame. The Bible says, this should not be. “With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.” Verses 9 & 10. But the excuse we do give is that “it is my temperament”, is there any temperament that is beyond God’s control? Not at all!
I am happy to let you know that you can control your tongue and mouth if only you can:
1. Accept that you have problem.
2. Be ready to change
3. Be cautious and
4. Lastly be ready to surrender your tongue to God according to one of the hymns that says:
Take my voice, and let me sing
Always, only, for my King;
Take my lips, and let them be
Filled with messages from Thee,
Filled with messages from Thee.
1. Thank God for creating you in His likeness.
2. Lord, me the grace and power to control my tongue.
