Read 1 Timothy 4:12–16
The world is dying; the church is sick. Only a godly leader can salvage it. Paul told Timothy, Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Why? There are two things to watch: character and competency.
We know that competence is the enemy of change. It goes beyond words. Morris Code said, “If you think you can do it, that’s confidence; if you do it, that’s competence. ” Timothy needed to know well the doctrine before he could competently teach it. Competency is the leader’s ability to say it, plan it, and do it in such a way that others would know that he/she knows how, and willingly they know that they want to follow him / her. This is your mission as God’s light in the world ( Matt. 5:16).
Nevertheless, your competency will only take you as far as your character will sustain you. As incompetency, doesn’t get someone very far in life, so is competency without character. Why is that? All of us can name highly gifted pastors, politicians, athletes and other public figures who failed, not because they weren’t competent, but because they weren’t up for the job, morally. An addiction, an affair, embezzlement, or just a little dishonesty, sometimes, caused them to lose their job or lose their influence.
Have you ever realised that you are a leader being looked at by others at home, in office, at school, in the society, among the club members, etc.? Character is the sum of who you are. Do you desire to be the leader that counts? Then, you need to work twice as hard on your character as you do on your competency.
Prayer Points
1. Oh Lord my God, mould me into what You want me to be, so that I will be able to fulfil my part of Your mission here on earth.
2. Holy Spirit, help me to bring out the leader in me, unto Your glory.
3. Pray for the leaders of our Church, that God should help them to lead His Church towards the realization of the end – time revival.
